You could give the GIMP (General Image Manipulation Program) a try if you want something you can run on your own machine (you're having to use photoshop on the lab's machines, right?). It's what I use for my photography. Learning it will be no less frustrating than photoshop, but you may be able to practice more since it'd be on your box. It's open source, so it's free:
